Samar Yazbek is an Alawite woman — from the same sect as Assad — who supported the revolution and documented the regime's response in a diary she kept through the first months of the uprising in 2011. Arrests, torture, the disappearance of neighbors, her own interrogation. She eventually had to flee. This is the dispatch filed before the escape — the moment before the world reduced Syria to a refugee crisis, when it was still people in specific places making specific choices.
