Biko was the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa and was murdered by security police in 1977 at age 30. These essays — written between 1969 and 1972 under the pseudonym Frank Talk — are the clearest articulation of his philosophy: that psychological liberation must precede political liberation, that Black people must stop seeking validation from white institutions, that consciousness is the first battleground. The most important political text written in South Africa in the 20th century. A dispatch from inside a mind the regime was so afraid of they killed it.
