Ferdowsi spent thirty years writing the Book of Kings — 50,000 couplets tracing Persian history and mythology from the creation of the world to the Arab conquest. He did it deliberately to preserve the Persian language at a moment when Arabic was threatening to replace it. It worked. Modern Iranians can still read the Shahnameh in something close to its original language. The most successful act of cultural preservation through literature ever attempted. The deepest possible dispatch from a civilization that refused to be erased.
