Fadi's family escapes Afghanistan in the summer of 2001 — but in the chaos, his younger sister Mariam is left behind. Then September 11 happens. Fadi is now an Afghan American boy in a California school watching the country he just arrived in go to war with the country he just left, while his sister is somewhere in Kabul. Senzai, who is Pakistani American, writes from inside the experience — not as a cultural explainer but as a story about a specific kid carrying an unbearable weight. Photography gives Fadi a way through. The book is quiet and specific and does not resolve the way real grief resolves.
